Flu Vaccinations are normally available between mid September and the end of January each year.

Special arrangements for patients over age 65:

This year, there is a new flu vaccine for patients who will be age 65 or over as at 31st March 2019. We have been advised that production of the new vaccine will be slower this year and all providers will be receiving their stock in several batches between mid September and early November. We will have limited stocks available on our open days. We will offer the new vaccine to patients aged over 65. Where stock becomes unavailable, we will recommend that patients wait for further stock to arrive. We expect to have received all stock by the end of October and will be offering the opportunity for patients to book appointments during November.

If you are eligible to have a flu vaccination, we recommend that you attend one of our open days.

Open days for 2018 are:

Special Arrangements for children between the age of 2 years and under 18 years...

All children age 2 or 3 years as at 31st August 2018 are recommended to have the flu vaccination at their GP surgery.

Any child between the age of 2 year & under 18 years in an "at risk" group is recommended to have the flu vaccination.

These groups are offered a nasal spray instead of a traditional vaccination.

Please note that we will have stocks of the child vaccine available for our open day at Gosforth Valley. If your child is entitled to a flu vaccination and you normally attend at Gosforth Valley, please bring them along to the open day at Gosforth Valley on Tuesday 9th October.

Children registered at Moss Valley should contact the practice to book an appointment.

Please read on to see if you should have the flu vaccination...

Flu vaccination is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu and its complications.

Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwise healthy it will usually clear up on its own within a week.

However, flu can be more severe in certain people, such as:

  • anyone aged 65 and over
  • pregnant women
  • children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease)
  • children and adults with weakened immune systems

Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it's recommended that they have a flu vaccine every year to protect them.

The injected flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS annually to:

  • adults over the age of 18 at risk of flu (including everyone aged 65 and over)
  • pregnant women
  • children aged six months to two years at risk of flu

65 and overs and the flu jab

You are eligible for the flu vaccine this year (2018-19) if you will be aged 65 and over on March 31 2019 – that is, you were born on or before March 31 1954. So, if you are currently 64 but will be 65 on March 31 2019, you do qualify.

Flu nasal spray vaccination -Children

The flu vaccine is routinely given on the NHS as an annual nasal spray to:

  • children aged two & three - delivered by your GP surgery
  • children in school years reception, one, two, three & four - delivered in school
  • children aged two to under 18 years at a particular risk of flu - delivered by your GP surgery

Is there anyone who shouldn't have the flu jab?

Most adults can have the injected flu vaccine, but you should avoid it if you have had a serious allergic reaction to a flu jab in the past.
